The Action Center, a community center based in the Ocean Bay Houses became the hub of local community organizing. 1 week after Sandy they opened their own distribution center, for most this was the only access to food, clean water and basics like diapers. Most stores remained closed for months. The one subway line that runs through the Rockaways was heavily damaged by the flood, it reopened Memorial Day 2013. The majority of Rockaway residents' cars were also totaled by the surge. 12/23/12
